One of the big problems for the Android OS running on a growing number of Mobile handsets these days is fragmentation. Many different handsets running many different versions of the OS. A big reason for much of this is the slow uptake of new versions by the carriers, often leaving consumers frustrated and feeling left behind.
It looks like Google are taking steps to address the issues surrounding fragmentation by splitting out many of the component parts and making them available in the Android market in the same way Google Maps is currently.
This is a good move by Google in my book and will surely help Android continue gaining market share as more and more handsets become available.
