Satisfaction…

There’s a certain satisfaction in knowing that somehow, some place, someday even Bill Gates has hammered his desk in frustration brought on by a healthy dose of Windows. :0)

Free Extracts From Mastering Dojo.

Posted in Ajax, Interesting and Entertaining, Web Development on May 12th, 2008 by Shaun

ajaxian have managed to get hold of some free chapters from a new book being produced by the Pragmatic Programmers. There are two chapters to download and they are pretty good. The first chapter hits on the DOM API’s and uses a specific challenge to walk through and expose us to dojo.query and class addition, the second chapter is Ajax the Dojo way which exposes us to dojo.data and dojo.grid.

The book is in Beta and as with all the Pragmatic programmers books you can buy the beta and get updates all the way up to the final publication.

Making Waves.

Posted in Ajax on March 4th, 2008 by Shaun

I was reading an older post from Ajaxian yesterday which introduced WaveMaker an open source Drag and drop browser based Ajax application builder. I watched the demo this morning and it looks pretty good. Building a user interface that is hooked into different data sources is a breeze and you can easily test your app as you go along to make sure you are getting the results you need.

If you have used a RAD development tool before you’ll feel at home with a tool pallete on the left and a properties box on the right. In the demo a three tabbed application was built that hooked into a mySQL database and web services as well as a custom service written within WaveMaker studio.

It certainly is feature rich. When you are done developing the app and want to distribute you can easilly create a jar file at the end which you can distribute.

If, like me you are not so hot on the java front this may be a good way to learn some new stuff, but as a dev studio this looks pretty cool indeed.

Big Release day for Prototype 1.6 and Script.aculo.us 1.8

Posted in Ajax, Prototype, Script.Aculo.Us, Web Development on November 8th, 2007 by admin

Regular readers know I am a fan of the Prototype JS Library and the accompanying Script.aculo.us library.  Despite moving into EXT at work, I still like to stay in touch with Prototype and still use it at home.  1.6 is a big leap forward and includes some really nice changes.

Ajaxian have a long and reasonably detailed post on the subject so I won’t re-invent the wheel here, it’s worth checking the new releases out and there’s now a book that will help you get the most from this pair of awesome script libraries.

The ultimate bus ride?

Posted in Ajax on October 19th, 2007 by admin

Stick a bunch of developers on a bus add a splash of new technology, an itinerary of stops and an eagerness to share and it appears you get a wild road trip.

If I could find a way of convincing my boss that this is something we need to do, I’d do it!

Here’s a neat video of Adobe’s recent On AIR Bus tour..

Ajaxian Previews EXT 2.0

Posted in Ajax, Web Development on September 7th, 2007 by admin

Ajaxian have a blog entry this morning which previews some of the cool new features due in EXT 2.0.  They have included a nice video too showing some of the stuff in action.

I like EXT and it’s fast become my library of choice for web development whenever I can use it.  EXT 2.0 looks to be a really nice update to what started out as yui-ext.

Joe Hewitt interview on Audible Ajax

Posted in Ajax on August 2nd, 2007 by admin

Joe Hewit, of Firebug fame, has a chat with the folks over on Audible ajax.  Theres some cool information in this pretty laid back conversation with Joe, you certainly get a feeling for how laid back and yet also how committed Joe is.
Discussing things like the iPhone and how Joe got into mobile development, Firebug and Joes time as a developer on Firefox & Netscape.  It’s a pretty decent interview, well worth the time.
