Beam me up Robbie!

Posted in Interesting and Entertaining on August 4th, 2007 by admin

I’m a little gobsmacked and thought twice before i decided to blog this.  Aparently Robbie Williams is in talks to play Kirk in the new Star treck Movie.
I can’t decide if this is better or worse than ben Afleck playing the part.

Either way i thing it’s a bit bizare.

Vista’s bling… not quite there.

Posted in Interesting and Entertaining, Linux on August 4th, 2007 by admin

Continuing my chain of posts showing off the flashy bling of Ubuntu with Compiz Fusion. here’s a nice vid that shows Vista’s bling going head to head with ubuntu.

It’s worth noting that ubuntu is running Beryl in this video.  Beryl and Compiz were separate projects for a while but are coming together again to form Compiz Fusion.  A damn good move which we’ll all benefit from.

It’s also worth noting that I’m not doing a ‘my OS is bigger than your OS’ kinda thing, I just thought this vid was interesting, given some of the marketing over how cool Vista looks.  A nice touch at the end when you get to see the Demo curse strike Microsoft from wayyyyy back ;0)

Compiz Fusion - making it fun to work on a computer.

Posted in Linux on August 4th, 2007 by admin

With the recent release of Vista, you’d be forgiven (almost) for assuming that you need a windows desktop to get a good looking operating system to work on.

I’ve been running Ubuntu for a few weeks now and apart from being impressed with the speed and stability of the OS, When I added Compiz Fusion to the mix things went to a whole new level.  Productivity increased and I got a whole new feelgood factor.

It’s not enough for me to just rant on about how cool it is, you’ll have to see it in action for yourself.

i’ve managed to track down a decent video of Compiz fusion in action, this video shows off some of the main features of Compiz Fusion and is by no means a comprehensive showcase of the features.  it’s being improved and updated very often and there’s always some new features being added.

If you have Ubuntu and want to add Compiz fusion into your desktop check out some of my posts in the past couple of weeks or pop over to lummie’s blog to get hold of a tutorial link

Silverlight vs Air - or the right tool for the job

Posted in Web Development on August 3rd, 2007 by admin

More a case of the ‘right tool for the right job’ as opposed to ‘Air is better than Silverlight’.
Ryan Stewart has written a great article highlighting some of the crossover between Silverlight and Air as well as  pointing out where these two technologies diverge to give a slightly different tool for a given job.

Ryan does a good job of dispelling the myth that Air and Silverlight are going head to head.

I wonder where Java FX fits into all this ;0)

Joe Hewitt interview on Audible Ajax

Posted in Ajax on August 2nd, 2007 by admin

Joe Hewit, of Firebug fame, has a chat with the folks over on Audible ajax.  Theres some cool information in this pretty laid back conversation with Joe, you certainly get a feeling for how laid back and yet also how committed Joe is.
Discussing things like the iPhone and how Joe got into mobile development, Firebug and Joes time as a developer on Firefox & Netscape.  It’s a pretty decent interview, well worth the time.

Firefox - tool of choice for paractically everything?

Posted in Ajax on August 2nd, 2007 by admin

Aside from being a damn fine browser Firefox is fast becoming a tool of choice for practically everything web related.

This week I’ve found two more plug-ins that have already increased my Firefox usage by 20% at least.

First up is ScribeFire.  ScribeFire is a blogging tool that I am really quite impressed with.  It sits out of the way unobtrusively in the status bar until you want it, then clicking on it’s icon will cause it to slide up and occupy the bottom of the browser window.

Hooking up to my blog was real easy.  I fired up the wizard, input the address to the blog (just the standard address you’d browse to) and it picked up the correct path to the settings I then input my User name and Password and bingo all connected.  ScribeFire has picked up all my categories, and I can add new categories on the fly.
I can view and modify old posts, view pages and if I have more than one blog, I can add them and switch to them quick and easy.
Response is really quick and the blog editor is WYSIWYG too which is a boost.
ScribeFire doesn’t seem to be able to pick up your blog’s style sheet so posts can be previewed in the style they’ll appear in, this is a feature it could maybe do with but I’m being picky and to be honest, I’ve never worried much about that in any other blog tool.

I’m using Wordpress for my blog and as I don’t have any other blogs I’m not sure how the setup will perform but I’d be pretty confident that it will work just fine.

My other find, thanks to my pal Binky, is a cool addin that syncs up your bookmarks.  I know that there are a ton of other sites and tools that do this but this is an addin to Firefox and that just makes things so much easier.
Foxmarks is  again a doddle to set up, just install from the firefox addins page.  After restarting Firefox you’ll need to set up an account and then sync your bookmarks.  That’s it you are done.  I set this up on both my laptop running feisty and my desktop on windows 2003 all bookmarks synced up in seconds.  Nothing could be easier, all my management is done within Firefox itself so I don’t need to maintain another online account or remember to log in or… yada yada yada it’s all so much easier.

no doubt I’ll get a thrashing from folks telling me that they already have an online account with some site or other that does this and it has shiny buttons n all that but hey it’s whatever floats your boat, and Firefox is still floating mine ;0)

Now I’m on the hunt for a decent IM addin…

Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 released.

Posted in Ajax on August 1st, 2007 by admin

Microsoft have released a nice set of goodies for us developers to play with.  Visual Studio 2008 (Orcas) Beta 2 is out.  seems that this release is a full install not a Virtual package like other releases so be warned.  you’ll also want to be sure you have enough bandwidth for this one as it’s a 3Gig download for the image.  VS2008 Express editions are also available for download.

Along with VS2008 is the .Net Framework 3.5 which aims to improve and build on Framework 3.0 which was a minor increase to include the WPF stuff.

Silverlight has two releases out, theres the RC for 1.0 and a refresh of 1.1.

ASP.Net Futures has also had a release that included support for VS2008 and Silverlight.

Plenty to play with there.

These releases are a good step towards final release and Microsoft are starting to include something called go Live licensing with these versions, aparently this means you can deploy to working environments and upgrade to the final release and full licence without needing to start from scratch.  handy if you want to get cracking on the cutting edge.

Brad Abrams has a load more detail on his latest blog entry on this.

[UPDATE]
The Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 is available as both standalone installs of the software itself, (with a script to run so Framework 3.5 does not break ASP.Net Ajax 1.0), and also Virtual PC Images so you can refresh your test environments with a new differencing disk if you’ve used the VPC images before.
